OpArt!
THINK
When something plays tricks on your eyes it is called an Optical Illusion. Optical Illusion artists can use lines, shapes, forms, color, light and patterns to create artwork that fools our eyes and brains! Here are some Op Art artists whose artwork plays tricks on our eyes! M.C. Escher is famous for having created lots of different kinds of Op Art.
Bridget Riley is another artist famous for creating Op Art that looks like it's moving!
Optical illusions happen because our brain is trying to make sense of what we see in the world around us. Optical illusions can trick our eyes (& our brains!) into seeing things which may or may not be real! You can create your own Op Art... just follow these steps below!
PLAN
You will need...
White paper (any size) Black marker Pencil Crayons or colored pencils CREATE
First, draw 4 or 5 wavy vertical lines and then draw a horizontal line across the middle of your paper. Next, draw curved lines above the middle line. Then, add curved lines below the middle line (see video tutorial). You may practice a few times before you begin. You may draw a diagonal line instead of a vertical line, or you can choose to add color to your work. You can add value (a 3-D effect - if you decide to use color) by pressing harder with your crayon or colored pencil near the edges of each curve and softer in the middle of each curve. Fill the whole paper! Have fun and create it in your own way!
